IN MEMORIAM Algirdui Gluodui

Algirdas Gluodas, a long-term head of UAB Rūta, a political and public figure, died unexpectedly on August 1 this year.
Algirdas Gluodas was born on 25 April 1940 in Plokščiai Village, Šakiai District. In 1965, he started working as a lecturer at the Smalininkai Agricultural Mechanisation Technical School, and from 1968, he was the deputy director. From 1974 to 1992, he was the director of Smalininkai Soviet Farm-Technical School, Smalininkai Higher Agricultural School. In 1993, after UAB Rūta regained the descendants of the founder's family, he managed the company until the end of 2014. Algirdas Gluodas was one of the first in Lithuania to be able to restore the family business after the nationalisation of property during the soviet occupation. When Algirdas Gluodas took the lead, UAB Rūta, the company abandoned during the Soviet period, became a company that strictly adhered to the highest production hygiene standards, a producer of chocolate and sweets of exceptional taste and quality.
Under the leadership of Algirdas Gluodas, collections of dessert sweets “Amber Road” (Gintaro kelias), “Lithuania” (Lietuva), “Čiurlionis” evoking Lithuanian national consciousness were created. Guests at the Presidency of the Republic of Lithuania and the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania were treated to the products of UAB Rūta. Rūta's candy boxes and chocolates have become a Lithuanian gift standard for foreign guests. Algirdas Gluodas created a vision and in 2012 opened the only chocolate museum in Lithuania with an educational program in Šiauliai. At the initiative of Algirdas Gluodas, UAB Rūta became the first business company to support the reconstruction of the Lithuanian Palace of the Rulers.
Algirdas Gluodas gathered to act together business, governmental, artistic and educational communities. He particularly supported students and young people by providing space for practice and creativity, both on behalf of the company and in person, sponsoring a wide range of cultural and sporting events, without remaining indifferent to people’s personal troubles. In his free time, he cherished woods and enjoyed the company of grandchildren.
Algirdas Gluodas' active intellectual and patronage activities, which have become a role model in Lithuanian society, are evidenced by lots of letters of thanks and awards.
In 2013, he was awarded the Gold Medal PRO AUGENDA CONCORDIA by the Santarvė Foundation for fostering concord.
In 2014, he was awarded the Medal of the Order of the Grand Duke of Lithuania Gediminas.
In 2014, he was honoured with a commemorative badge "For Merits to the Region of Jurbarkas ".
In 2014, he was awarded the Chaimas Frenkelis’s nomination for maintaining centuries-old traditions of industry, for fostering a national product and national values, for innovation in business and patronage.
In 2015, he was awarded a token of thanks from the Lithuanian Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Crafts.
In 2015, he was awarded the token of honour Lily of the Order of Saint Casimir for the development of socially responsible business, promotion of Šiauliai City and Lithuania by the quality of UAB Rūta products, support for the restoration of the Palace of Rulers of Lithuania, spiritual culture of Šiauliai City, establishment of Christian respectful communication in business and public environment.
In 2019, he was awarded the Gabrielė Petkevičaitė-Bitė Commemorative Medal “Serve Lithuania” for philanthropic activities, especially the promotion and support of young people's self-expression.
In 2019, he was awarded the bronze "Work Star" by the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Crafts in Lithuania.
An extraordinary personality has deceased, deserving of the utmost respect and remembrance for his life and deeds.
